Injection mold lead time refers to the total duration of the entire development workflow, from mold design to final delivery. The cycle length depends on mold complexity, machining processes, steel selection and factory resource allocation.
Some customers assume a custom injection mold can be finished within just a few days, without understanding all required production phases. This article explains why injection molds typically require several weeks rather than days.
The full injection mold development cycle has four core phases: mold design, mold machining, mold assembly, and mold trial & adjustment. Each phase contains multiple sub-steps.
Mold design is the core of mold development. All subsequent mold manufacturing follows the drawing. Rational design directly determines mold quality, performance and production efficiency. It includes four key steps:
Requirement Analysis: Review customer product drawings, material requirements, output volume and surface finish. Conduct manufacturability checks on wall thickness, draft angle and other features to optimize design.
Structural Design: Create drawings for parting line, gating system, cooling circuit, ejection system and side core-pulling mechanism.
Mold Flow Simulation: Use Moldflow or Moldex3D to simulate filling, cooling, shrinkage and warpage, then optimize design if needed.
Design Review: Submit drawings to the customer for confirmation. Manufacturing can only start after approval.
This phase normally takes 1–4 weeks.
Simple molds with clear requirements may finish design in 1–3 days. Complex parts or repeated design revisions can extend this stage up to one month.
Machining turns 2D/3D drawings into physical mold tooling. It covers steel procurement, rough machining, precision machining, polishing and heat treatment.
Steel Sourcing & Rough Machining: Select mold steel such as P20,718H,S136,H13 according to expected mold life. Cut steel into mold insert and plate blanks, then use milling or CNC for rough material removal.
Precision Machining: CNC finishing, EDM, drilling and tapping. Most mold features are completed in this step.
Polishing & Surface Treatment: Mirror polishing, texture etching, TiN coating or chrome plating to improve wear resistance and demolding.
Heat Treatment: Quenching and tempering for high-hardness steels like H13, S136 and NAK80. Vacuum heat treatment prevents oxidation and deformation. Not required for all mold grades.
Machining usually takes 2–8 weeks, often the longest phase. Timeline varies with complexity, surface requirements and factory capacity.
An injection mold consists of many separately machined components. Technicians assemble mold base, ejection system and cooling lines. After assembly, inspect moving parts like sliders and lifters for smooth operation. Test cooling circuits and venting to guarantee full mold functionality.
This stage generally takes 1–3 weeks.
Mold performance can only be verified on an injection molding machine. At least two rounds of mold trials are required. Any defects found during testing will trigger mold rework.
This phase takes 1–4 weeks, depending on how many revisions are needed.
Once parts pass customer acceptance, the mold will be delivered.
A basic mold takes a minimum of 3–4 weeks. Complex tooling requires even longer. It is impossible to finish a qualified custom injection mold within just a few days.
