Thermoplastic vs BMC & Bakelite Molding: Full Differences Explained






Introduction

Many people in the injection molding industry misunderstand that thermoplastics, BMC and bakelite follow similar molding principles because they all go through feeding, mold closing and injection procedures.


In fact, thermoplastic molding and thermoset molding (BMC / Bakelite) are completely different in forming mechanism, temperature logic, machine requirements and final product performance. Using ordinary thermoplastic 

machines to produce BMC or bakelite parts will easily cause mass defects, screw blocking, and even permanent equipment damage.

Below are the five essential differences between thermoplastic and thermoset (BMC & Bakelite) molding processes.


1. Different Molding Principles (Physical vs Chemical Change)

Thermoplastics (PP, ABS, PBT, PA)
Thermoplastic molding is a reversible physical melting and cooling process. The raw material is heated and melted into fluid state, injected into the mold cavity, and finally cooled and solidified.
All runners, gates and defective products can be crushed, recycled and reproduced. The material can be melted repeatedly without chemical structure change.


BMC & Bakelite (Thermoset Materials)

BMC and bakelite molding is an irreversible chemical cross‑linking curing reaction. Under high mold temperature, the material undergoes molecular cross‑linking and permanent hardening.

Once cured, the structure cannot be melted again. Finished parts, runners and leftover materials cannot be recycled or re‑pelletized.


2. Opposite Temperature Control Logic

Thermoplastic Molding: Hot Barrel + Cold Mold

The barrel is heated to melt the plastic pellets. The mold is kept cool to solidify the molten plastic quickly and shape the product.


BMC & Bakelite Molding: Cold Barrel + Hot Mold

The injection barrel is kept low temperature only for material conveying, preventing premature curing and screw blockage. The high‑temperature mold provides heat energy to trigger cross‑linking reaction and fully cure the part.


3. Different Injection Machine Requirements

Thermoplastic
General horizontal or vertical injection machines with standard screws and barrels are fully applicable for thermoplastic mass production.


BMC & Bakelite

Ordinary plastic injection machines cannot be used. Thermoset‑specialized injection machines are mandatory. These machines are equipped with corrosion‑resistant screws, anti‑drooling nozzles and high‑rigidity platens. For high‑precision and bubble‑sensitive products, vacuum exhaust systems are required to avoid pre‑curing and screw jamming issues.


4. Different Common Molding Defects

Typical Thermoplastic Defects
Sink marks, warpage, weld lines, short shots, silver streaks, flow marks.


Typical BMC & Bakelite Defects

Internal bubbles, surface burning, bulging, mold sticking, poor venting, pre‑curing and screw blockage.


5. Product Performance & Application Differences

Thermoplastic Parts

Thermoplastics feature good toughness and weldability but limited heat resistance. They are widely used for general housings, connectors and common structural components for civilian and industrial daily products.


Bakelite & BMC Thermoset Parts

Thermoset products offer excellent insulation, arc resistance, high temperature resistance, flame retardancy and superior dimensional stability. Although the material is relatively brittle and non‑weldable, it is indispensable for high‑reliability scenarios.


Typical applications include electrical terminals, motor insulation structures, new energy sensors, and high‑temperature resistant kitchenware handles.


Conclusion

Although thermoplastic and thermoset injection processes look similar, their core mechanisms are totally opposite. Misusing thermoplastic machines or standard processes for BMC and bakelite production will lead to unstable quality, frequent defects and equipment damage.


Choosing the correct molding technology according to material characteristics is the key to stable mass production.
