Many clients confuse bakelite molds with conventional plastic molds. Hitech explains the key differences between phenolic bakelite molds and thermoplastic injection molds in structure, operation and design specifications.
Bakelite molds are also called phenolic molds. Some people mistakenly believe bakelite parts are only made via compression molding of bakelite powder. In fact, modern bakelite components are commonly produced on injection molding machines.
Both bakelite molds and thermoplastic injection molds are composed of cavities, cores and auxiliary molding systems. With matched mold movements, they can manufacture plastic components in various shapes and sizes. Even so, notable differences exist between these two mold types.
Bakelite molds must be hardened molds. Their gates and sprue bushings are larger than those used for thermoplastic molding. Gates are generally designed with inserts.Bakelite forming requires sustained high temperature; therefore heating tubes are installed inside the mold to maintain the required molding temperature. 2.Thermoplastic Injection Molds
Conventional thermoplastic molds rely on cooling systems to solidify products. Minor gaps may appear on the parting surface during molding, which can lead to slight flash on finished parts.
The root difference originates from material properties. Bakelite is thermoset material that cures through cross-linking reaction under constant high heat and cannot be remelted. Thermoplastics melt upon heating and solidify after cooling, which leads to completely different mold design standards and supporting systems.
