Transformer Material Series: Bobbin

Introduction

The transformer bobbin serves as an essential structural component of electronic transformers. The main functions of a bobbin are listed as follows:

First, it provides designated space and routing for winding enameled wires. Secondly, it supports the magnetic core and facilitates assembly. Moreover, the metal terminals inserted on the bobbin can be soldered onto PCB boards for electrical conduction. Double-slot structural design helps increase the safety distance between primary and secondary windings to satisfy safety standard requirements.

There are multiple classification methods for transformer bobbins. Classified by matching magnetic core shapes, common types include PQ, RM, EE, EF, EPC, ER, EP, POT and more. Combined with different dimensions, specific models are defined, such as PQ35, PQ32, PQ26, PQ20.

In terms of raw materials, thermoplastic plastics are widely adopted, including Nylon, PET/PBT and LCP. Among them, only LCP for SMD transformers can withstand high-temperature soldering; the other two materials cannot sustain high-temperature soldering conditions.

Besides thermoplastics, thermoset plastics such as phenolic bakelite are extensively used. As one of the most mainstream materials for transformer bobbins, phenolic material features outstanding flame retardancy, high hardness and excellent heat resistance, and can withstand repeated soldering operations.

Commonly adopted material grades include PM9630 / PM9820 (manufactured by Sumitomo, UL File No.: E41429) and T375J / T375HF (manufactured by ChangChun Bakelite, UL File No.: E59481). These grades meet dielectric strength and global safety certification requirements.

Generally, product design prioritizes standard transformer bobbins. Custom mold development will be arranged if standard specifications fail to meet project demands.

In recent years, driven by automation and customized demands in the transformer industry, conventional bobbin designs can no longer satisfy advanced production requirements. Developing new-style bobbins with high barrier ribs, enlarged safety creepage distance and elimination of traditional winding sleeves has become a major trend across the industry.

Hitech(HK) International Limited specializes in precision molding of phenolic bakelite transformer bobbins. We provide stable, certified thermoset bobbin solutions for power transformers, switching power supplies and industrial electronic equipment.
