Introduction
Bakelite (phenolic resin) belongs to irreversible thermoset material, which relies on high-temperature cross-linking curing inside molds to form finished parts. Ordinary plastic injection machines are designed for recyclable thermoplastics like ABS, PP, PE. Due to totally different material curing mechanisms, the two types of equipment have massive differences in core structure, temperature control, injection unit and production logic. Hitech sorts out all key distinctions for factory equipment procurement and production debugging.
1. Different Screw & Barrel Injection Unit (Core Distinction)
Bakelite Thermoset Machine
Special low-shear alloy screw with deep groove and large flow channel; short compression section to avoid high friction heat.
Small clearance between screw and barrel, anti-carbonization and premature curing of bakelite powder.
No check ring one-way valve; check valve will trap cured material and cause blockage.
Wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant barrel liner, resistant to filler abrasion inside bakelite molding compound.
Barrel temperature controlled at 70–110°C, only for softening pre-plasticizing, strictly prevent overheating curing inside barrel.
Ordinary Thermoplastic Machine
Standard screw with long compression and metering section, strong shearing capacity to fully melt plastic pellets.
Equipped with movable check ring to prevent melt backflow during injection.
Barrel temperature 180–300°C, high heat to completely melt solid plastic particles.
Large screw clearance allows full melting of thermoplastic resin.
2. Opposite Temperature Control Logic
Bakelite Machine
Barrel: Low temperature (heating only for softening)
Mold: High constant temperature 160–180°C, equipped with independent mold heating system, heating tubes and oil temperature controller.
Machine added heat insulation plates between mold and fixed plate to isolate high mold heat from machine frame.
Purpose: Complete irreversible cross-linking curing under mold high temperature after material filling.
Thermoplastic Machine
Barrel: High temperature for melting pellets
Mold: Cooling water circuit design, maintain low mold temperature 40–80°C.
Purpose: Cool molten plastic rapidly to solidify finished products, no chemical reaction happens.
3. Distinct Production Cycle & Pressure Parameters
Bakelite Molding
Longer injection holding & curing time: After cavity filling, need long pressure holding and delay curing to finish cross-link reaction.
Higher stable clamping force: Prevent flash generated by gas overflow during thermoset curing.
Multiple-stage stable pressure output, to compensate shrinkage and exhaust internal volatile gas.
Sprue & runner waste cannot be recycled, all cured leftover materials must be discarded.
Thermoplastic Molding
Short cooling cycle, fast mass production turnover.
Medium clamping force, no long-time pressure holding required.
Sprue, runner and defective products can be crushed and recycled for reproduction.
4. Unique Mold Matching Requirements
Bakelite Special Mold
Full heating system built inside mold plates, thick heat insulation boards installed on mold outer sides.
Deep and wide vent slots reserved on parting surface, to discharge a large amount of volatile gas produced during bakelite curing.
Mold cavity surface hard chrome plating, smooth finish to reduce sticking risk.
No complicated textured surface design, easy demolding of brittle bakelite parts.
Thermoplastic Mold
Built-in cooling water channels instead of heating pipes.
Small thin vent slots only for air discharge during filling.
Support various texture, grain and matte surface design freely.
5. Different Hydraulic & Control System Configuration
Bakelite Machine
High-torque hydraulic motor for screw rotation, powerful plasticizing capacity for powder raw material.
Independent exhaust delay function on controller, reserved curing timing module.
Enhanced hydraulic clamping system to sustain long-time high-pressure holding.
Dedicated program curve for thermoset curing process.
Thermoplastic Machine
Standard torque screw motor, mainly for pellet melting.
Core control function focuses on cooling time and melt plasticizing parameters.
No special long-time pressure holding and exhaust delay program modules.
6. Raw Material Feeding & Processing Principle Difference
Bakelite Equipment
Process powdery molding compound (PF, DAP, UP, EP, UF). Material only softens inside barrel, chemical curing reaction only occurs after entering high-temperature mold; curing reaction is irreversible, finished parts cannot remelt again.
Thermoplastic Equipment
Process solid plastic pellets. Material fully melts under high barrel temperature, only physical state change without chemical cross-linking; waste materials can be remelted and reused infinitely.
Summary
The fundamental gap between bakelite injection machines and ordinary plastic injection machines lies in material reaction logic: thermoset equipment adopts "low barrel temperature + high mold temperature" design for chemical curing, while thermoplastic machines use "high barrel temperature + cold mold" for physical melting and cooling solidification.
Wrong equipment selection will cause severe defects including barrel blockage, incomplete curing, heavy flash and mass scrap. Hitech uses professional thermoset dedicated injection machines for all bakelite, DAP, UP and EP molded parts, guarantee stable molding quality for all high-temperature insulating components.
Hitech(HK) International Limited specializes in thermoset mold design and precision injection molding. We adopt full set of dedicated bakelite injection equipment to produce stable, high-temperature resistant electrical insulation molded parts for global customers.
